At the end of last baseball season, I mailed cards to the then-newest crop of Jewish Major Leaguers. I also sent cards to several veteran JMLers, including NL MVP Ryan Braun, the Twin's Danny Valencia, and Boston Red Sox star Kevin Youkilis.
I've had success in years past with through-the-mail (TTM) autograph requests to "The Greek God of Walks." I mailed to Kevin during 2008 and 2009 Spring Training and received a signed card back more than a year later.
Last week, I received an envelope with a Fenway Park return address. Enclosed were a lovely form letter, pre-printed fascimile signature photo and my cards and SASE.
The note inside explains that Youk cannot respond to autograph requests "due to such a high volume of mail."
I don't judge Youkilis for this, mind you; I'm writing this post merely to offer a word of caution to fellow collectors. And, considering that my cards could have easily landed in the recycling bin, I'm grateful to the Red Sox for returning my cards and SASE. Plus, the "official photo" is a nice addition to my JML collection.
Has anyone else had success with Youk through the mail? Have you received similar form letters?
