The newest Jewish Major Leaguer in 2012 is a familiar face to Phillies fans. Pitcher Michael Schwimer rejoined the Philadelphia bullpen on April 25 and threw a perfect 9th inning in relief of Cole Hamels, as reported by JewishBaseballNews.com.
Schwimer is featured on numerous minor league cards, as detailed in this 2011 JewishSportsCollectibles.com posting.
These include issues from the 2011 Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs and 2011 International League (AAA) All-Stars, 2010 Reading Phillies and 2010 Eastern League (AA) All-Stars, 2009 Clearwater Threshers Phillies and 2008 Williamsport Crosscutters Phillies.
Schwimer is also featured in the 2005 and 2006 University of Virginia baseball team cards, according to Beckett, but the 6'8" hurler has no big league cards, yet. Perhaps by the time the Phillies mark Jewish Heritage Night on August 7, Schwimer will made his major league card debut and Jewish baseball collectors will have something to cheer about?
Sellers on the auction giant are, as of this posting, also offering signed and unsigned photos of Schwimer, a baseball signed by the pitcher, and tickets from his 2011 Philies debut game.
Schwimer has proven himself a quick and willing through-the-mail signer. He autographed two cards for me in response to my September 2011 letter c/o the Phillies.
What Schwimer cards or memorabilia do you have in your Jewish baseball collection?
